# Add AI to a UK SMB WordPress site without breaking it: the practitioner build

WordPress powers about 43 percent of all websites globally and a meaningful share of UK SMB sites. Most of those sites use AI as an offsite writing tool and never plug it into the site itself. The four features in this build live inside WordPress and pay back inside 30 days: a blog drafting Project that cuts first-draft time to 20 minutes, an FAQ schema generator that lifts click-through 5 to 12 percent on existing posts, an AI search box that takes search-to-click from 30 percent to 70 percent, and a chat widget configured to run cookie-free under UK GDPR. No new theme, no developer, just four plugins and a configured Project.

## What you need

- A self-hosted WordPress site on a UK or EU host (SiteGround, Kinsta, WP Engine UK).
- A ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro account at £15 to £20 a month.
- Yoast SEO or Rank Math (the FAQ schema feature is in both free tiers).
- A Tidio, Crisp or Botpress account for the chat widget. Tidio Free works for under 50 conversations a month.
- 90 minutes uninterrupted to set up.

## Step 1: Build the blog post drafting Project (25 minutes)

WordPress blogs drift because writing posts from scratch takes 90 minutes. The Project below cuts the first draft to 20 minutes; the editor still does the final pass.

1. Create a Project named Blog Post Drafting.
2. Upload your last 10 strong blog posts, the brand voice notes, and the keyword research output (or a one-pager of the topics that matter to your business).
3. System prompt: draft a UK SMB blog post in the voice of the uploaded examples. UK English. 800 to 1,200 words. Sections: clear hook, the practical answer, three steps the reader can do today, one named tool, one named regulator or framework where relevant.
4. Add the rule: never invent a statistic. Where a number is needed, write [stat to confirm] and let the editor add the verified figure.
5. Workflow: pick the topic, paste the brief, get the draft, editor reviews in 20 minutes, publishes in WordPress.

## Step 2: Generate FAQ schema for every existing post (15 minutes)

FAQ schema lifts the click-through rate on Google by 5 to 12 percent on the posts that earn it. Most WordPress sites have zero FAQ schema. The Project below produces five FAQs per existing post in 90 seconds.

1. Add a second Project named FAQ Schema Generator.
2. System prompt: read the supplied blog post and produce five frequently asked questions with concise answers under 80 words each. UK English. The questions are the ones a UK SMB reader would actually search for. Output as plain question and answer pairs.
3. In Yoast or Rank Math, open the post, paste the five FAQs into the FAQ block, save.
4. Workflow: do the top 30 posts first; the lift on the top 10 by traffic is where the click-through rate increase shows up.

## Step 3: Help-me-find-it search box (15 minutes)

Default WordPress search is keyword search. AI search returns the right page even when the query is vague. The build below uses SearchWP with the AI add-on or Algolia AI Search.

1. Install SearchWP plus the SearchWP AI add-on, or Algolia for WordPress.
2. In the dashboard, enable AI search on the post type set you want covered. For most SMBs, that is posts, pages and the products custom type.
3. Test five common vague queries. Most SMB sites lift search-to-click rate from around 30 percent to 60 to 75 percent.

## Step 4: Cookie-free chat widget (15 minutes)

Most chat widgets drop tracking cookies that need consent banner sign-off. The build below uses Tidio with cookies disabled, calibrated to your site content, with the conversation log staying inside the GDPR retention window.

1. Install Tidio and connect it to your WordPress dashboard.
2. In Tidio settings, disable analytics cookies. The chat works on session storage with no third party cookie required.
3. Train the AI on your top 30 pages by URL. Tidio reads the pages and builds the answer corpus.
4. Set the retention to 30 days for chat logs to align with your privacy notice.
5. Add a one-line disclosure in the widget welcome message: this chat is AI-assisted, a human will reply within one working day if you ask for one.

## Step 5: First 30 days of operation

Run the build for one full month. Track FAQ click-through, search-to-click, blog publishing rate and chat-to-lead conversion. Most UK SMB WordPress sites see blog output double, search satisfaction lift 25 to 40 points, and chat-to-lead conversion sit at 4 to 8 percent depending on the page mix.

## What you ship

Four AI features live inside the WordPress dashboard, doubled blog output, FAQ schema across the top 30 posts, AI search lifting search-to-click by roughly 30 points, and a cookie-free chat widget that converts at 4 to 8 percent. A WordPress AI build prices at £900 to £2,200 setup plus £150 to £300 a month for content operation when sold to clients.

## What to build next

The ai-chatbot-website-uk-smb-build tutorial walks through the converting funnel for the chat widget once it has been live for a fortnight. The wire-method-bus-test-handover tutorial covers the runbook that hands the four-feature stack to the site manager so the practitioner does not stay locked into operation.

## Common mistakes

- Adding the chat widget without disabling cookies. The default tracking turns the cookie banner into a friction point.
- Skipping the FAQ schema on existing posts. The schema is a one-hour lift across the full archive that most sites never run.
- Using AI to draft posts the editor never reads. The AI drafts; the editor signs off.
- Hosting on a US-only server when UK or EU residency is preferred. Most UK SMBs sleep better with the host based in London or Amsterdam.

## Questions people ask before they start

### Does this work on Elementor and Divi?

Yes. The four features are theme-neutral. SearchWP, Yoast, Rank Math and Tidio all integrate with Elementor and Divi without conflict. The blog post drafting Project produces clean text that pastes into the WordPress editor regardless of theme.

### What about WooCommerce?

The build above covers a content site. WooCommerce adds the product description and the cart abandonment work, which is covered in the ai-for-ecommerce-conversion-build tutorial. The two stack: this build first, the WooCommerce build on top.

### Is the AI search feature worth the SearchWP licence?

For sites with under 50 posts, no. Default search is fine. For sites with 200+ posts and any product or service depth, SearchWP plus AI is the £79 a year that pays back inside the first month on lifted on-site conversion.

### How does this affect Core Web Vitals?

The chat widget is the only feature that touches load time. Tidio loads asynchronously after first paint, so LCP is unaffected; CLS only shifts if the widget icon position is wrong. Test once after install.

### How does this fit with the existing best-ai-for-proposals-quotes-solo tutorial?

That tutorial is the proposal-writing pattern at the offline level. This tutorial is the on-site AI build for a UK SMB WordPress site. Most service businesses do this on-site build first, then layer the proposal pattern on top.
