# Match the assistant to the work in 5 minutes: an honest 2026 comparison

Run the fortnight audit at the bottom of this page and you walk away with a one-line answer: which assistant is your primary subscription, which one is your supporting subscription, and which one you can skip. Most solo professionals end up paying for two and saving four hours a week. The criterion that matters is not benchmark scores; the criterion is the largest column when you sort your last fortnight of work into "short and varied", "long-form or voice-critical", "Workspace-native" and "live research". The largest column is your primary tool.

## The current state, April 2026

- ChatGPT runs GPT-5.5 (top model) on Plus, Pro and Business as of 23 April 2026. Pricing: Plus about £20 a month, Pro about £200 a month, Business per seat.
- Claude runs Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5 on Pro and above. Pricing: Pro £16 annual, Max for heavier use.
- Gemini runs 3.1 Pro plus the Workspace integration. Google AI Pro (the rebrand of Gemini Advanced) is £18.99 a month. Workspace Business plans now include Gemini at the standard seat price.

## Voice and writing quality

Same prompt to all three: "Write a 200-word LinkedIn post in my voice about [topic]. Voice profile attached." Read the three drafts back to back.

- Claude: highest fidelity. Drafts often pass for the writers own copy with light edits.
- ChatGPT: strong, but recognisable as default ChatGPT without voice calibration. With calibration, gets close to Claude.
- Gemini: improved in 2026 but still trails on natural cadence. Better for structured outputs than for free-flowing prose.

## Long document work

- Claude: clear winner. The 200K context window plus Artifacts means a 100-page brief stays usable end to end.
- ChatGPT Pro: 400K context window unlocks larger inputs but the long-context recall is patchier than Claude in real testing.
- Gemini: 1M context window is the headline number. In practice it is reliable to about 200K tokens; past that, recall slips on long PDFs.

## Research and citations

- ChatGPT: Deep Research feature on Plus (25 reports a month, plus 15 lightweight runs). Strong source aggregation, decent citation density.
- Claude: Research mode added in late 2025. Lower citation density than ChatGPT, better synthesis of long sources.
- Gemini: Deep Research with the 1M context window. Best for synthesis of many short sources; weaker on writing the report.
- Perplexity (out of category but worth knowing): still the cleanest tool for live research with citations on the Pro plan.

## Integration with the work you already do

- Gemini: best fit if you already live in Google Workspace. Drafts in Docs, summaries in Gmail, formulas in Sheets.
- ChatGPT: connects to Drive and Gmail plus OneDrive and SharePoint via Apps (the connectors feature, renamed in late 2025). The integrations are good but not native.
- Claude: Google Drive integration on Pro and above. The Microsoft side is weaker.

## Cost over a year

For a solo professional already paying £14 a month for Workspace, Gemini is included. Add ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at £16 a month. The full three-tool stack costs about £46 a month and most professionals find the saving on a single weekly client task clears it.

## The fortnight audit that picks for you

Run a two-week audit of your work. For each task, mark the best fit: short and varied (ChatGPT), long-form or voice-critical (Claude), inside Google Workspace (Gemini), live research (Perplexity Pro). The largest column is your primary subscription. The second is your supporting subscription. Skip the rest unless your audit says otherwise.

## How to use this on a discovery call

When a client asks "which one should we use", run the fortnight audit on their work, not yours. The implementer angle is to recommend the smallest subscription stack that covers their actual hours, which builds practitioner trust over affiliate-marketer pitching.

## Common mistakes

- Picking on benchmark scores. Benchmarks measure the wrong things. The right measure is fit to your weekly work.
- Subscribing to all four because of feature envy. The cost compounds and only one or two get used.
- Paying for Gemini Advanced separately when Workspace already includes Gemini. Check your existing plan first.
- Treating the comparison as permanent. Re-run the audit every quarter; the leaders shuffle.

## Questions people ask before they start

### Which assistant is best in 2026?

There is no single winner. ChatGPT for short and varied work, Claude for long and voice-critical work, Gemini if you live in Workspace. The right answer comes from your own fortnight audit.

### Will the next ChatGPT close the voice gap?

Partly. GPT-5.5 (April 2026) writes better than the 5.4 line did. Claude still produces less default-AI prose without calibration. The gap is smaller than it was in 2025.

### Is Gemini really included in Workspace now?

Yes. Since January 2025, Gemini AI features are bundled into all paid Workspace plans (Business Starter at £7 annual, Standard £14, Plus £22). Separate Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons are gone.

### Should I cancel ChatGPT if I have Claude?

Not yet. Most solo professionals end up with both because they do different jobs. The combined £32 a month annual is small compared to a single hour of saved billable time.
